My AncestryDNA Result

My AncestryDNA results came in! Wow! It was pretty exciting pouring over the details last night. Fascinating to see that my ethnic heritage is quite multi-cultural, some of which I predicted based on what I had been told growing up, and some of it quite surprising:

35% Native American (Mexican/Peruvian roots, I presume)

22% Iberian Peninsula (My Old World Spanish/Portuguese roots)

18% Italian/Greek (La famiglia!)

12% Ireland (What? Irish? Haha! Didn't see that coming. Laura said she's going to buy me a "Luck of the Irish" T-shirt. Awesome.)

5% Middle Eastern (I would have guessed more than that for some reason.)

4% Northern and Southeastern African (Very cool!)

And the rest are trace results from various other parts of the globe.

I look forward to learning more about it as I talk to family members. I read on someone's blog that Ancestry.com "is very broad, but also very shallow, its accuracy limited to four generations, great-great-grandparents. This is because you get half your DNA from each parent, who each got half from their parents and so on, halving with each generation. As a result, the amount you share with any of your great-great-grandparents is just 6.25%."

I'm still unpacking what it all means. Meanwhile, I'm making plans to expand my culinary palate and introduce some new meals to our home based on the results. Perhaps I'll start with a celebratory Guinness...

I’m excited to begin my Fruitive Challenge today! It’s a big leap of faith because I had never imagined myself committing to a 100% Whole Foods Plant Based diet! But here I am doing it. I thank my brother Gregg for recruiting and motivating me to give it a try. He’s been eating this way for several years now and he looks much healthier than I do. Here he is advertising his restaurant, Fruitive , on Instagram. Here’s the catch though, for the first two months of the diet, I’m also committed to eating SOS free diet, which means no added salt, oils, or sugar in the food I consume. I have been pretty worried about that part of the plan because I love my salt, oil, and sugar, but I have to say that I had a really good first day of it. I ate fresh fruit for breakfast, rice and salad for lunch, and a rice and beans bowl for dinner. The trick for me is to add a variety of no salt seasonings to taste and to toss in a mix of vegetables including avocado. I had one mishap worth mentioning though

We signed up with Shipt for grocery-getting. It's our first time and it feels luxurious! I could get used to this! Like the first time I felt When Grubhub delivered me a hamburger, But better. Hey, the Shipt employee just texted me. She's on her way. Wait. A breaking update from News 8: "Shipt: Meijer team members at 3 stores test positive for COVID-19" Me: Uhh. Laura: She's here! Stand back. Don't touch. Smile. Say thank you. Wave goodbye. Spray the bags. Wipe the groceries clean. Did you get the receipt? Maybe we can return the COVID-19 For some in-store credit? For now, let's get dinner ready And eat nutritiously! A crown of luxury indeed Fit for a king and queen! I can't get used to this.
