Tootsie Rolled

Image
What are the chances that I would inadvertently place a handful of Tootsie Rolls (that I stole from my children's candy basket) next to a naked brown Crayola crayon? Blech!

Fridge Fire

Image
I fell asleep grading last night only to be woken at 2 a.m. by my frantic wife telling me there was a fire. In the fridge.  Water leak + Lower fridge light bulb = Continuous sparks and the smell of burning plastic. True story.  Long night. I unplugged the fridge and transferred the perishable items to my mother-in-law's fridge.  The next day we had our condo fix-it guy come by: It's nice to have a new fridge that doesn't leak and also a kitchen light fixture and a range hood that works properly.  A bonus was the contractor finding a gold ring hidden inside of our old range hood! Maybe we can sell it and pay our bill. Nope. A gemologist confirmed that the gold and diamonds aren't real. Sigh...who hides a fake ring in a range hood! Haha...

Ritalin

Image
Me: Honey, I'm thinking about asking my doctor to prescribe me some Ritalin. Laura: YES! Me: Uh, wow. That was a bit enthusiastic. Laura: I mean yes, but just be careful because that stuff is a chemical and too much of that is not good for you. Me: What did you say?....

Welcome Freya Hope!

At 7 lbs, 11 oz, we are glad she came a week early. She is very verbal and feisty, and she has a voracious appetite; She will fit in just fine.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and The Beatles

Image
I referenced Arnold Schwarzenegger having played Hamlet in a parody of Shakespeare's play: Student: Who is Arnold Schwarzenegger? Sigh. I'm old. It reminds me of a time long ago when I stunned my middle school substitute teacher by asking, "Who are The Beatles?" He nearly fainted...

S'more Girl Scout Cookies

I called Laura at her work because I had searched all over the kitchen and couldn't find the Girl Scout S'mores cookie package I bought a couple days ago from my cousin: Laura: Really? You have to ask? Seriously?... Me: Oh, no! I was afraid of that! Laura:  Uh, excuse me, but have we not met? Shall I reintroduce myself to you?  –  "Hello, I'm Laura, your very pregnant wife who you left alone with a box of Girl Scout cookies, like two days ago. What were you expecting!..." Me: (pained laughter) Hahahaha!... Laura: Besides, they weren't very good anyway. Me: Noooo! That's even worse! If they're not good, then you don't eat them; you leave them for me to eat them! Laura: (evil scornful laughter) Hahahaha!...

Prenatal Naming

Image
My wife has a prenatal care checkup coming up: Laura: Is there anything I should ask the doctor tomorrow? Me: Uh, yes. What to name our baby. We knew a few months ahead of time that we would name our first born, Sophia. But with our second born, we searched every possible girl name to finally decide on Thalia just at the last moment when the nurse handed us the clipboard. Now we fear we're just not going to name our third baby at all. Nope. We got nuthin'...

My AncestryDNA Result

Image
My AncestryDNA results came in! Wow! It was pretty exciting pouring over the details last night. Fascinating to see that my ethnic heritage is quite multi-cultural, some of which I predicted based on what I had been told growing up, and some of it quite surprising: 35% Native American (Mexican/Peruvian roots, I presume) 22% Iberian Peninsula (My Old World Spanish/Portuguese roots) 18% Italian/Greek (La famiglia!) 12% Ireland (What? Irish? Haha! Didn't see that coming. Laura said she's going to buy me a "Luck of the Irish" T-shirt. Awesome.) 5% Middle Eastern (I would have guessed more than that for some reason.) 4% Northern and Southeastern African (Very cool!) And the rest are trace results from various other parts of the globe. I look forward to learning more about it as I talk to family members. I read on someone's blog that Ancestry.com "is very broad, but also very shallow, its accuracy limited to four generations, great-great-grandparents. This is beca
